Librarian: Clean Up the Arcane Library! Review - A cosy adventure in magical organisation

ArtRising's Librarian: Tidy Up the Arcane Library! transforms everyday tidying into a relaxing fantasy adventure, but does its magical premise offer enough to keep players turning the page?

7/10 - A quirky magical organisation sim

Story and Concepts - A mischevious fairy

We have all visited a library and seen the occasional book left on the wrong shelf, but in Librarian: Tidy Up the Arcane Library! things are a little more extreme. A mischievous fairy has cast a spell, sending thousands of books flying from their rightful places, and it's your job to restore order to the magical library.

This is going to need more than a spoonful of sugar

The story itself is simple: a fairy ruined the library and sent all the books flying, and now you are tasked with putting them back. The real story of the library, however, is told through its book titles. Humorous references, romance novels and bizarre textbooks often make you stop for a moment, whether to appreciate a clever joke or simply wonder who thought of Turning Poop into Food.

Answering the big quesitons in life

The world seems rather small when you first see it, a simple room with shelves on two levels, but that is just it: a library room. The titles give us the world around us, showing us what lies beyond. References to monsters, dungeons, guilds and magic help paint a picture of a much larger fantasy world beyond the library's walls.

Gameplay – Book meets shelf, a tale as old as time

The gameplay loop is wonderfully simple: find a book and return it to its rightful shelf. There are no hidden mechanics, side quests or complex systems. Instead, Librarian focuses entirely on making one simple task as satisfying as possible.

Everyone has to start out somewhere

Progression – Novice Librarian to Master Tidy-up Artist

What makes this loop work is the constant sense of progress. Every shelf you fill and every book you return provides a small but satisfying reward, making it surprisingly easy to lose track of time. As you fill the shelves, you gain experience and level up. Each level lets you unlock a new ability, making it easier to return books to their rightful places. You can summon books to your hands, have them place themselves onto the shelves, or highlight companion texts hidden among the piles. The abilities don't change the game's fundamentals, but they do make the progress quicker and more satisfying as you progress through the library.

Accio - wait wrong series
Once you've completed the library, there isn't much incentive to return unless you're chasing every achievement. Even then, the additional playthrough feels more like a requirement for completion than a reason to keep playing, as the core concept doesn't change significantly.

Audio & Visuals – Cosy vibes with a magical soundtrack

The colourful cartoon art style suits the game perfectly. It never aims for photorealism, nor does it need to. Instead, the clean visuals and simple style complement the relaxing gameplay and help reinforce the cosy atmosphere. The animations are as smooth as butter. There is nothing more satisfying than watching all the books fly through the air and land in your hands, or watching them light up one by one as you put them back in the right place.

Magic makes everything better

It truly fits the cosy genre perfectly

Less is, in fact, more. Where some games might have tried epic scores, the gentle classical music with a slight magical lilt makes it feel like you're in a library. There are no loud sounds or dramatic shifts in the music, just a relaxing soundtrack that wouldn't feel out of place whether it was playing in my local library or a magical one.

Performance

I haven't found a single bug in my multiple playthroughs. The books do what they need to do and go where they need to go. No lag, no bugs. Loads in quick enough and then runs like a well-oiled machine.

Value for Money

At £5.29 on Steam, I think the game is fairly priced for what it offers. This isn't some major Triple A title, it isn't trying to compete with sprawling RPGs or endless multiplayer games. It's a cosy sorting experience, and I think the asking price matches that well. Is it worth the money? Yes, it won't break the bank, and while there is only a few hours of gameplay, those hours are relaxing, polished and genuinely enjoyable.

Final Verdict – Should You agree to sort these books?

Walking away from Librarian: Tidy Up the Arcane Library!, I am glad I picked it up, and I enjoyed playing it. For a studio's first game it is solid, no bugs, good load time and stellar art and music. However, it does have the downside of it being a once and done sort of game, there isn't much that makes me want to immediately jump back in for another playthrough. Despite this, I would recommend it to fans of more cosy and relaxing games as it is one to enjoy. Librarian: Tidy Up the Arcane Library! is a cosy organisation game that shows even the simplest ideas can still be immensely satisfying.

Rating:

⭐ 7/10

Standouts:

Graphics and sound design are a head above the rest

Personal thoughts:

If you're looking for a relaxing game to unwind with after a long day, Librarian: Tidy Up the Arcane Library! is an easy recommendation. Those seeking complex mechanics or endless replayability may want to look elsewhere, but if a cosy organisation game sounds appealing, ArtRising has delivered a polished and charming debut.
